In a statement on its instagran page, Apopo said Magawa was in good health last week but his health began to deteriorate over the weekend and he died at the age of eight.
The rat was widely credited with helping the discovery of more than 100 land mines in Cambodia.
‘His contribution allows communities in Cambodia to live, work and play; without fear of loss of life or limb.
In September 2020, he was officially awarded the PDSA Gold Medal - the highest prize of bravery that an animal can receive. Last year when Magawa retired, HeroRAT Ronin took over the reins as a new native mouse. '
